What Is AI, Really? (And Why Most Definitions Miss the Point for Engineers)
When someone says "AI" in a meeting, they could mean anything from a simple rule-based script to a system that generates full assembly structures from a text prompt. That ambiguity is a problem because it lets vendors call anything "AI-powered" without actually telling you what is happening under the hood.
Here is the simplest definition that is actually useful: AI refers to software systems that can learn patterns from data and use those patterns to make predictions, generate content, or take actions. That is it. No sentience, no magic. Pattern recognition at scale.
For mechanical engineers, the relevant branches of AI are mostly machine learning (ML) and its subset deep learning (DL). Machine learning is when you train a model on data instead of writing explicit rules. Deep learning uses neural networks with many layers, which is how modern language models and image recognition systems work.
The term you will hear most in 2026 is "generative AI," which refers to models that create new content like text, images, or code rather than just classifying inputs. When your colleague says they used "AI" to draft a tolerance analysis or find a similar bracket from your PDM vault, they are almost certainly talking about generative AI built on a large language model.

LLMs, Foundation Models, and Why Size Is Not Everything
A Large Language Model (LLM) is a neural network trained on massive amounts of text data. GPT-4, Claude, Llama, Mistral are all LLMs. They predict the next word in a sequence, and they do it well enough that the output feels like a knowledgeable person wrote it.
A foundation model is a broader term. It is any large model trained on broad data that can then be adapted for specific tasks. All LLMs are foundation models, but not all foundation models are LLMs. Some work with images, some with code, some with 3D geometry.
Here is what matters for engineers: a generic LLM trained on the internet knows a little about everything but not enough about anything specific. Ask ChatGPT to calculate the bending stress on a cantilever beam with a distributed load, and it might give you the right formula. Or it might confidently give you the wrong one. There is no way to tell from the output alone.
That is why domain-specific models matter. A model trained on over a million pages of engineering standards, textbooks, and technical documents will give fundamentally different answers than one trained on Reddit threads and Wikipedia articles. The training data shapes what the model knows, and for engineering work, generic training data is not good enough.
RAG, Fine-Tuning, and How AI Actually Connects to Your Data
Two terms you need to understand are RAG and fine-tuning. They solve different problems, and confusing them leads to bad purchasing decisions.
Fine-tuning means taking an existing model and training it further on your specific data. You are changing the model's weights so it "learns" your domain. This is expensive, slow, and requires significant data science expertise. For most engineering teams, fine-tuning is not practical and not necessary.
RAG stands for Retrieval-Augmented Generation. Instead of changing the model itself, RAG retrieves relevant documents from your knowledge base and feeds them to the model as context before it generates an answer. Think of it like giving an expert a stack of reference material before asking them a question. The model does not need to "know" everything because it can look things up.
For mechanical engineering teams, RAG is the architecture that matters. It is how an AI system can search your PDM vault, pull up the relevant design history or spec sheet, and use that context to answer your question with cited sources. The model does not memorize your data. It retrieves it, reads it, and reasons about it in real time.
This is critical for IP protection too. With RAG, your proprietary data does not become part of the model's training. It stays in your systems, gets retrieved when needed, and the model never stores it. That is a fundamentally different security story than fine-tuning, where your data literally becomes part of the model.
Hallucinations, Citations, and Why "Trust But Verify" Is Not Good Enough
Hallucination is the term for when an AI model generates something that sounds correct but is factually wrong. It does not "know" it is making a mistake. It is just predicting the most likely next word, and sometimes the most likely next word leads to a plausible-sounding answer that has no basis in reality.
For mechanical engineers, hallucinations are not just annoying. They are dangerous. A hallucinated material property could lead to an under-spec'd component. A wrong tolerance could cause an interference fit where you needed a clearance fit. A fabricated reference to a nonexistent ASME standard could pass through a design review if nobody checks.
This is why citations matter more than confidence. A system that tells you "the yield strength of 304 stainless is 215 MPa" is less useful than one that says "the yield strength of 304 stainless is 215 MPa, per ASTM A240, Table 2" and then lets you click through to the source. The citation is the verification mechanism. Without it, you are trusting the AI the way you would trust a junior engineer who never shows their work.
Some AI tools now show the Python code behind their calculations so you can verify the logic, not just the answer. That transparency is what separates engineering-grade AI from consumer chatbots. If a tool cannot show you where its answer came from, you should question whether it belongs in your engineering workflow.
The Terms That Actually Matter for Your Day-to-Day Work
Let me cut through the noise and highlight the AI concepts that will impact your work as a mechanical engineer in the next 12 months.
Semantic search is how AI understands the meaning behind your query, not just the keywords. When you search your PDM for "brackets that fit a 40mm envelope in the cooling assembly," semantic search understands what you mean even if no file is tagged with those exact words. This is a massive upgrade from traditional keyword search, which only finds exact matches.
Vector embeddings are the math behind semantic search. They convert text, CAD metadata, and even 3D geometry into numerical representations that capture meaning. Two parts with similar geometry end up close together in vector space, which is how AI-powered part search can find similar components across your entire vault without you knowing the exact part number.
Tokens are how LLMs measure input and output. A token is roughly three-quarters of a word in English. When a vendor says their model supports "128K context," that means it can process about 96,000 words at once. For engineering work, context window size matters because it determines how much of your design history or spec document the model can consider at once.
Prompt engineering is just a fancy term for asking better questions. The way you phrase a query to an AI system affects the quality of the answer. For engineering work, being specific about constraints, materials, load cases, and standards gets you dramatically better results than vague questions.
Agentic AI refers to systems that can take multiple steps to solve a problem, not just answer a single question. Instead of you asking five separate questions to find a part, an agentic system can search your vault, filter by constraints, check availability, and present options in one interaction. This is where AI tools for engineering are heading in 2026.
